Dear Members of the NSE Community:

As the death toll from the Japanese earthquake and tsunami mounts and events at the Fukushima nuclear reactors continue to unfold, our thoughts are with the people of Japan. As you all know, reliable technical information about the crisis affecting the nuclear reactors is hard to identify in the media reports, but the demand to know what is happening is understandably very great. As a service to our students and the MIT community NSE will be sponsoring an information session at which we will discuss the technical facts of the current situation, as best we understand them. Topics for discussion will include: the characteristics of the boiling water reactors at Fukushima; the possible causes of the accidents; the current status of the reactors; the technical options that may now be available to the reactor operators; and the possible future implications. The session will take place at 4pm in 10-250. You are all of course invited to attend.
